IT Internship

Department/Course: ITDEV-198/ITSUP 198 Credits: 2
Course Description: Click here to see the information on the official MATC website.
Prerequisites: Final semester or consent of instructor.

Overview:

To successfully complete the IT Internship, you are required to work in an IT-related position for at least 96 hours during this semester. This applies regardless of whether you work for pay or volunteer. Your position does not necessarily have to be in the same area as your major. If you are already employed in an IT-related position, you may be able to use that position for your internship. Ask if you have any questions.

If you are unable to find an IT-related position or make arrangements for volunteer work, then you may substitute a project that will appropriately display your skills. You are responsible for all aspects of the project, including the idea, but I will help you develop specs, if necessary. This project is best completed in conjunction with the project course, but can be completed independently.

Remember that MATC is not responsible to find you a position. I will share whatever position openings that come my way via Blackboard and ask you to do similarly.

The live section will meet in-person twice, with the rest of the semester allocated to self paced exploration on the job and preparing the progress reports and other paperwork. When the live section does not meet, I will be available during the scheduled hours. I will accept paperwork in person, e-mail or US Mail. No faxes, please.

Forms:

These can be downloaded from the Course Documents area in Blackboard.

  • Contact Form: Return this to me as soon as possible. This is the only contact information that I will have about your supervisor and use it when I have questions and need to get in touch with them.
  • Cooperative Education Learning Agreement: (aka Contract Form) Please have your supervisor sign and return to me.
  • Internship Objectives and Evaluation: Meet with your supervisor near the start of the term to develop objectives. Your supervisor will grade you based on your accomplishing the objectives. Return the graded form to me by the end of Week 6.
  • Final Evaluation: This is the final evaluation submitted to me by your supervisor, again based on your original objectives. Return this to me by Week 14. WARNING: Late evaluations result in much lower grades.
Progress Reports:

Every two weeks, submit a progress report of a few paragraphs to me detailing what you´ve worked on and your impressions of what you´re getting out of your internship. I use these reports to get a feel for how you´re adjusting to the workplace and as an indicator of the quality of the internship positions provided by the company. These reports comprise 15% of your grade.

Grading:

85% of your grade will be based on your supervisor´s evaluation, the remainder on your progress reports. I reserve the right to adjust your grade up based on the expectations that were set for you and my impression of the evaluation. The only circumstances under which I will grade you lower than your supervisor are if you fail to submit progress reports and/or timely evaluation forms.

If you have any issues related to the course, please bring them up with me outside of class, either in person or via e-mail. I´ll make every effort to take care of them. There are other avenues to pursue, but please contact me first.
